Job 1:12–22

Job’s heartbreaking losses captured in these verses are intensified because they occurred without a hint of warning. It’s easy to overlook the abrupt swiftness of the blows that hit Job because, as readers today, we know they are coming . . . and why. Job knew nothing. In fact, he may never have been told all the details of the plot. But Job’s strength of character kept him from cursing God over the loss of everything. These verses reveal why Job became a man of heroic endurance; they also may reveal to us how tightly we’re holding on to our own possessions.
